Who is our trash hauler?

The City contracts with Athens Services for its refuse and recycling.  All single-family and multi-family residential, and all commercial properties in the City are required to receive trash collection service from the City's selected contractor. Currently, the City contracts with Athens Services.  For billing inquiries, additional information, or other related services, please call Athens toll free at (888) 336-6100.

Holiday Schedule

Holidays create a one-day delay in collection service (Monday customers’ trash will be picked up on Tuesday, etc.).  Athens Services observes the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

If a holiday falls on a Sunday, waste collection services will not be delayed.

For questions and additional information, please contact the Public Works Department at (310) 378-0383 or Athens Services customer service by calling (888) 336-6100 or visiting Athens Services website.

Dumpsters

All Dumpsters used within the City must be serviced by Athens Services. To order a dumpster please call (888) 336-6100. All dumpsters located on the street are subject to a dumpster permit issued by Athens.

How do I report a problem?

Any problems or concerns may be reported to Customer Service at (888) 336-6100. It is recommended you obtain the dispatcher’s name when you call in case future assistance is required. If that does not resolve the problem, please contact City Hall.

Can I place my trash cans in the front yard the night before my trash pickup day?

No. The Palos Verdes Estates Municipal Code prohibits the placement of refuse containers adjacent to the street or on City Parkland, even on collection day. The ordinance requires that containers are kept in a concealed trash area on the property where the City’s approved refuse hauler retrieves them and returns them after emptying. Please contact Code Enforcement at (310) 378-0383, if you have any questions or concerns.

What recycled materials are collected and do they need to be separated?

Residents are able to co-mingle recycling and refuse together. Athens transports the co-mingled waste to their Material Recover Facility and removes the recyclable materials for reuse. This process increases the amount of materials that can be recycled and reused and, decreases what goes to a landfill. Residents can place the co-mingled waste in their refuse containers for pickup.

Yard waste recycling is also a part of the PVE recycling program. Athens Services provides up to four 32-gallon green waste containers (specifically labeled for green waste) that are collected once per week on your regularly scheduled collection day. You may recycle an unlimited amount of yard waste as long as the materials are in similar containers that are clearly marked “yard waste.” Acceptable green waste includes grass, leaves, pruning, weeds, vegetation, twigs and small branches. Bundles, no longer than 36” and wider than 18”, or more than 30 pounds are also accepted. Please place bundles next to your green waste containers.

Additional green waste containers may be requested (up to four) at no charge by contacting Athens Services directly. For more information regarding the City’s recycling program, or to request additional containers, please contact Athens Services Customer Service Department at (888) 336-6100.

Athens Services does the recycling for residents; it is not necessary for residents to separate trash and recyclable materials (mixed waste).  Here's a video from an ABC News report that helps illustrate how the sorting and recycling system works.
