CAMPAIGN FINANCES/REPORTING:

The FPPC (Fair Political Practices Commission) is a state commission that is responsible for informing, assisting, interpreting and enforcing the Political Reform Act. The purpose of the Political Reform Act is to promote fair elections and good government. Among other things, the Political reform Act requires certain public disclosures of campaign spending. With a City election quickly approaching in March of 2019, the City Clerk’s office emphasizes the importance of complying with all FPPC requirements, and filing forms correctly and timely. Campaign finance disclosures are required by the State (and enforced by the FPPC). More information about the requirements can be found here:  http://www.fppc.ca.gov/learn/campaign-rules/where-and-when-to-file-campaign-statements/when-to-file-campaign-statements-state-local-filing-schedules.html. The law also requires certain disclosures on campaign literature.

Failure to comply with these filing forms and deadlines can result in prosecution and fines of up to $5,000 per violation. Recent violations, as an example, can be found here: http://www.fppc.ca.gov/content/dam/fppc/NS-Documents/MediaCenter/2018/enf-release-oct-2018
