Title 5 of the City Municipal Code indicates that no person shall conduct any business within the city without first obtaining and thereafter maintaining a business license annually pursuant to the provisions of the chapter and paying the required tax. This applies both to commercial and residential zones of the City.
The purpose of a business license is to regulate and license businesses within the limits of Palos Verdes Estates; to determine if businesses are operating within applicable laws and ordinances; to maintain a safe environment for the general public; and to assure that zoning, building, and fire codes are enforced.
The City of Palos Verdes Estates issues calendar year Business licenses that expire each December 31st. Renewing your business license by January 31st is important to remain in compliance with the municipal code and to avoid late penalties. If you are currently licensed you will receive a renewal notice by mail in mid- December. If you do not receive a license renewal, or are a new business requiring licensing, please contact or visit the City’s Finance Department at City Hall or (310) 378-0383. Renewal forms should be mailed to or dropped off at City Hall. All pertinent information on the renewal form must be fully completed and include a signature of an authorized representative of the business.
In 1993, City Council authorized home occupation businesses under certain limited conditions that ensure there is are no impacts on neighbors. If you operate any business from your home residence, you need to secure a home occupation business license.
Please call the Finance Department for more information about either of the licenses above.
